Faces
Why we ask
There is a sentence that almost everyone says if we let them talk long enough. It doesn’t come in the first minute, and it is usually not the answer to a question. At some point it simply comes out, as half a sentence, as if it were not important at all.
The series that grew out of it
SpicaJournal is a meeting place for inspiring stories, honest conversations and remarkable human lives. We show people, thoughts and works that bring light, hope and beauty into everyday life – a kind of LélekKert, a garden of the soul.
Faces is part of this garden. Here we don’t interview experts, and we don’t collect success stories. We look for people who do something – usually for a long time, usually quietly – and whose work holds something worth adopting.
What we ask, and what we don’t
We don’t ask what the secret is. There is no secret. What we tend to ask is when the moment came when they almost gave up, and what kept them going. That question usually brings a long silence, and after it something worth writing down.
We don’t ask what the secret is. There is no secret.
Nor do we ask whether someone believes. That is not our business. But we do ask what they lean on when things are hard – and the answers surprisingly often speak of the same things: patience, repetition, the need to begin something anew day after day.
Why this matters to a gift brand
Because in whatever we make with love, something of ourselves quietly remains. An object someone has made with care is different from an object that has been manufactured. It is not always possible to put into words how it is different, but you can feel it when you hold it.
That is why we think it matters to talk about the people behind it, too. Behind the gingerbread there is a master baker. Behind the ribbon there is a label maker who knows at what temperature the satin must be cut so that it never frays. Behind the print there is someone who decided that exactly a hundred copies would be made, and no more.
What is in the works
Our first longer conversation is being edited. As soon as it is ready, you will be able to read it here. Until then: if you know someone whose story you think we should hear too, write to us. Most good conversations began with someone recommending someone.
The great encounters of our lives sometimes begin with a single sentence.
